Social media image dimensions guide for 2026

Social media image dimensions change frequently and using the wrong size has real consequences. A pixelated profile photo signals lack of professionalism. A cropped YouTube banner hides important info. An Instagram post with black bars loses visual impact. Knowing the right dimensions is basic for any serious online presence.

Instagram has the most variations: square post (1080x1080), vertical (1080x1350), horizontal (1080x566), story and reel (1080x1920), and profile (320x320). The format that works best for the feed is the 4:5 vertical because it takes more screen space and drives more engagement than the classic square.

A common mistake is resizing without considering the safe area. YouTube thumbnails at 1280x720 look complete on desktop, but mobile crops the edges. LinkedIn banners lose their extremes on small screens. Always place text and important elements in the center of the image so they look good on any device.
