How to calculate and negotiate your rates as a content creator
Charging for your content is more art than science, but you need a data-driven starting point. The industry rule of thumb is CPF (cost per follower): $0.01 to $0.05 USD per follower for a feed post, adjusted by your engagement rate and niche. With 50K followers, solid engagement, and a high-value niche like finance, you can charge in the upper range.
Content type changes the price drastically. A story has a 24-hour shelf life and is produced quickly: it's worth less. A reel needs script, recording, editing, and has viral potential: it's worth more. A package combining post, stories, and reel is where brands see the most ROI and where you can offer a better total price than the sum of individual pieces.
The most common rookie mistake is accepting product trades as the only payment. Trades have value, but they don't pay rent. If a brand offers free product, evaluate whether the product value justifies your time and reach. A simple rule: if the product is worth less than your rate, negotiate additional payment or politely decline.
Present your rates in a professional media kit including your engagement rate, audience demographics, examples of past collabs, and your prices by format. Brands value creators who present themselves as professionals. Your link page can act as your public portfolio: link your media kit and have brands take you seriously from the first touch.
