What engagement rate is and why it defines your value as a creator

Engagement rate measures the percentage of your audience that interacts with your content. 100K followers with 200 likes isn't the same as 10K followers with 800 likes—the second account has 8x the engagement, and for brands that means the audience is actually paying attention. It's the metric that separates real creators from inflated accounts.

The standard formula is simple: add likes and comments on a post, divide by total followers, multiply by 100. But there's nuance. Some brands include saves and shares. Others prefer reach over followers. What matters is being consistent with the formula you use—and being able to explain it when a brand asks.

Engagement naturally drops as you grow. A 5K-follower account can hit 8% easily, but maintaining that at 500K is nearly impossible. Don't compare yourself to accounts of a different size. What matters is your trend: if engagement holds or rises while you grow, you're doing it right.

To improve engagement, post content that invites interaction. Ask questions in captions, use polls in stories, reply to every comment in the first hour, and post when your audience is active. The algorithm rewards interaction velocity: posts that get fast engagement get shown to more people.

Frequently asked questions

How is engagement rate calculated?+
The universal formula is: ((likes + comments) / followers) x 100. It's the standard agencies and brands use to evaluate influencers. Our calculator applies it automatically.
What's a good engagement rate on Instagram?+
On Instagram, 3% to 6% is considered good. Below 1% is low, 1-3% is average, and 6%+ is excellent. Smaller accounts usually have higher rates.
Does engagement rate vary by platform?+
Yes. TikTok tends to run higher (3-6% average) because the algorithm pushes content to more people. Twitter/X is lower (0.5-1%). Our calculator adjusts benchmarks per platform.
Can I use this calculator to negotiate with brands?+
Absolutely. Engagement rate is one of the metrics brands value most. Copy your result and share it directly in your collaboration pitches.
